About me - a Baby Boomer's life

This page about me is a mini-tale of a Baby Boomer's life. The story of one man's quest for adventure, freedom, knowledge, financial success, personal fulfillment, and happiness in a world of chaos, rapid change, and uncertainty.

My name is Dennis Stacey and I am the owner and editor of this web site. I wanted to create a Baby Boomers web site because the key topics are of great interest to me personally, and I am constantly researching them. I am a lifelong Baby Boomer, having joined the club in 1950, so I am very familiar with the history and development of our generation and the issues that confront all of us.

We're "talkin' 'bout my generation" here.

Baby Boomer issues are personal for me. I am one of the 76 million Boomers born in the United States between 1946 and 1964. The post World War II era had the highest fertility and birth rates in US history that have never been equaled to this day! After my parents generation had endured four years of a terrible war they set out to erase the wounds of that war by creating new life in their families, and the 19-year-long Baby Boom ensued. Our story is a fascinating history that is still being written.

This bulge in population demographics has been compared to a "pig in python". Our generation initially overwhelmed the public schools and forced double shifts until new facilities could be built. Our effect on the economy and work force was equally dramatic, and in the coming years our aging and impending retirement will be a huge strain on medical facilities and Social Security. We were born into a changing world and we have accelerated the pace of that change by our sheer numbers, but more significantly by our creativity and work ethic.

Change is a recurring theme in a Baby Boomers life, and mine has been no exception. I have actively sought change, variety, and adventure in my life and career. Some brief career highlights include construction work, heavy equipment operator, ski bum, prospector, gold miner, commercial fisherman, writer and editor, business owner, investor in small businesses, real estate, and stocks. I have owned and managed businesses engaged in sand and gravel and ready mixed concrete, a rock quarry, a placer gold mine, a retail travel agency, real estate investments and home remodeling, and websites. The story of how I came to build this website is told elsewhere. I can't say I've done it all, but I've done a lot of things.

I have always believed that the only real security I would enjoy in my life was what I created for myself. I did not want to depend on the benevolence of an employer for my financial security.

When I graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1974 my class was warned to plan on having several career changes ahead of us. That was some good advice, the ensuing years have been full of change. Since that graduation day I have primarily been self-employed for most of those years. My Bachelor's degree in Finance has been very useful for my entrepreneurial career. I have owned and operated five successful businesses during a thirty five year business career. Some of them have been sold and others still earn passive income for me.

Thirty one years ago I moved to Alaska and that has been my home ever since. "It wasn't just a job, it has been an adventure." Alaska has shaped my life, and allowed me to enjoy great opportunities and a wonderful lifestyle.

I met my wife, Alice in Alaska and we have been happily married for thirty years. We have two grown sons that we are very proud of, and one standard poodle that is our baby. We are active, athletic, and healthy and make our home in Anchorage. Alice is also a Baby Boomer, and advises me on women's issues. Our hobbies and interests include cross country skiing, working out, photography, fishing, cooking, music, and poodles.

The purpose of this website is to tell the story of the Baby Boomers and to present information that is useful to preserving the health and wealth of our generation. In considering the concept of wealth I was struck by just how essential good health is to our wealth. Without good health it is difficult to earn and retain wealth, or enjoy it. This reality coined the phrase, "Health preservation is wealth preservation." For this reason health issues receive equal treatment along with other more conventional wealth issues on this site.

My business philosophy and values guided the development this website.
• Always do your best
• Try to help others
• Do well while doing good
• Build with quality
• Sell quality products and services
• Add value to every relationship you enter
• Treat others fairly and with respect, as I would want to be treated

I hope you enjoy this website and that it makes a positive contribution to your well being and happiness. Comments and suggestions can be submitted through the Contact Us page. Our RSS feed can automatically keep you abreast of updates.

May your Baby Boomers Life be healthy, and wealthy.
