The baby boom UK lasted much longer than the US boom

The baby boom UK population is younger than US boomers

In the United Kingdom, the pattern of birth rates was quite different. There was a sharp post-World War II peak in 1947, when more babies were born than in any year since the post-World War I peak in 1920. A decline ensued, followed by a broader but lower peak in the 1960s lasting until 1971. The second peak in births was in 1964 and a third (smaller) one in the late 1980s. Thus British Baby Boomers are often younger than their American counterparts.

European and South-Pacific trends

The length of the baby boom in UK and other countries varied greatly. Many European countries, Australia and New Zealand also experienced a baby boom. In some cases, total fertility rates nearly doubled. The American birth model, was punctuated by an end to the booming births and a return to pre-war levels. Prior to WWII, fertility rates in Europe and America had been in a general decline due to improved nutrition and medicine. A rapid surge in births on such a grand scale had not been seen before. Based this model, baby boom years for other countries regarded as having a baby boom were as follows:

• France 1946–1974
• United Kingdom 1946–1971
• Finland 1945–1950
• Sweden 1946–1952
• Denmark 1946–1950
• Netherlands 1946–1972
• Ireland 1946–1982
• Iceland 1946–1969
• Australia 1946–1965
• New Zealand 1946–1965

Other countries also had booms

Mexico and Latin America had a baby boom that is often known as Los baby boomers or generacion baby boomers. These terms are often used to describe hispanic Baby Boomers in the US.

In the Soviet Union, members of the baby boom born after World War II are known as the Sputnik Generation after the Soviet-satellite launched in 1957. There was also competition on birth rate after the war. This was one of the many obscure aspects of the Cold War.
