The age 50 physical exam -
prevention is the best policy

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," and regularly scheduled visits to your doctor(s) can stave off a lot of Baby Boomer health care problems, or catch them before they become a really big deal. Routine check-ups and maintenance of oral health and vision are the foundation of preventive care.

An in depth physical examination around age 50 is an excellent plan. It is analogous to a 50,000 mile maintenance and servicing for your car. A colonoscopy at age 50 is recommended to look for pre-cancerous polyps and other potential problems. General blood work should be included to screen for liver problems, diabetes, cholesterol levels, prostate psa levels, and other Baby Boomer health care issues.

My Doctor's top wellness recommendation

Although I was not technically overweight, I was on the high side of the height and weight chart range. My Doctor recommended losing 10-15 pounds and staying on a regular exercise program. He explained that many other issues like blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol levels can be remedied or at least mitigated by weight loss and aerobic exercise. All of these things take on added importance after age 50.

A hidden benefit of weight loss is much less wear and tear on major joints. My doctor said that shedding 10 pounds has the effect of taking 40 pounds off my knee joints! That alone is a huge benefit.

The (surprising) extra benefits

Other benefits of weight loss include increased longevity, reduced medical costs, improved physical performance and stamina, less joint pain, higher self esteem, a general sense of well being, looking younger, and enhanced sex appeal! What is there not to like about this picture, other than a possible need for a new wardrobe.

Keep your body's machinery performing at peak levels. For Baby Boomers health care, prevention and health maintenance are a smart investment in your self and your future. Health preservation is wealth preservation.

Live long and prosper!
